It’s a question that has haunted women for millennia. We read it and hear an impossible standard. We feel the weight of “virtuous” pressing down on us, and we wonder if we’ll ever measure up. But what if we’ve been hearing this question all wrong?
The Hebrew phrase here is eshet chayil—literally, “woman of valor” or “woman of strength.” This isn’t the delicate, passive femininity our culture sometimes imagines when we hear “virtuous woman.” This is a warrior’s word. The same Hebrew root (chayil) describes military might, courage in battle, and strength in the face of opposition.
